This four-day hike, a three-hour drive east of Reykjavik, snakes through highlands framed by rainbow-colored rhy-olite mountains, steaming hot springs, and moss-covered lava fields. By the second day you'll be scaling the Jokultungur mountaintop for panoramic views of glaciers and the glassy lake Alftavatn. Then amble across the volcanic desert of Emstrur, where the landscape goes from lunar to lush. Weather can be unpredictable, so dress for wind, rain, snow, and fording rivers. Bring a sleeping bag and food, too: The huts along the route where you can stay overnight have bunk beds with mattresses and working stoves. There's also unlimited space for tents at designated campgrounds.
