In late November, Italian outerwear company Moncler released a line of down-stuffed parkas and pants to commemorate a 1964 expedition to K2, or Savage Mountain-the second-highest peak in the world after Mt. Everest. Made with heat-sealed tape and fine goose feathers, the coats cost $1,645 to $2,230 each and were designed to keep people alive at -40C. But Moncler's target demographic wasn't only rugged mountaineers. "The mountain experience also becomes a style experience," the company's marketing pitch read. High-end down parkas are a hot item this holiday season, driven by private equity cash infusions that have puffed up puffy coat companies and allowed them to move from the ski lodge to the city. Moncler is the market leader: In the first nine months of 2014, its revenue climbed 18 percent from a year earlier, to $605 million. It opened stores in warmer climates, including Atlanta and Hawaii.
