In 2002, after the Enron scandal, Congress created the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) to police the country's largest audit firms. To prevent agency officials from being susceptible to revolving-door job offers from the industry, lawmakers set salaries that are among the highest in government. Last year, Chairman James Doty made $672,676-funded by public companies and broker-dealers, not taxpayers. That's more than President Obama, who makes $400,000 a year, and more than four times as much as Mary Jo White, the head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, who oversees PCAOB appointments.
