Are equity markets poised for a long-term breakthrough this year? That question formed the foundation for a recent conversation between Michael Hartnett, Chief Investment Strategist, BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research, and Christopher J. Wolfe, Chief Investment Officer, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Private Banking and Investment Group. Do you see signs of a major shift in the financial markets? Wolfe: This year could see the beginning of a "Great Rotation" toward equities. Improving economic conditions, healthy corporate profits and balance sheets, and a long-awaited real estate resurgence, among other factors, could buoy stock prices, in addition to drawing in vast amounts of the investor capital that has been waiting on the sidelines. Companies have been strengthening their stock prices by buying back their own shares because corporate balance sheets are in strong shape.
