Enterprise IT departments can't help but have felt threatened during cloud computing's initial rollout. The water cooler chatter was grim: IT was to lose control of data to storage companies; operational functions were to be outsourced; defining IT tasks, such as scoping, planning and buying hardware, were gone forever. Once IT was King of the Hill-central, inviolable and confident enough to snarl if challenged about capabilities or time frames. Then along came an upstart that threatened to sideline IT completely.
