This Illinois startup has developed a way to turn non-food plants, wood, or crop waste into gases that are consumed by microorganisms and converted into ethanol. Coskata says it can churn out about 100 gallons of fuel from a ton of raw material, vs. 55 to 74 gallons per ton for traditional ethanol production.
