Investing in biofuels, as in most cutting-edge tech, can be treacherous. Ask anyone who snapped up stock in VeraSun Energy, a Sioux City (S.D.) company that briefly thrived as an ethanol titan. Investors paid up to 30 a share in mid-2006, only to see holdings vanish when the company filed for bankruptcy protection last fall amid plunging ethanol prices, bad bets on corn futures, and a credit crunch.rnNow, with such giants as DuPont, BP, Weyerhaeuser, Chevron, Archer Daniels Midland, Deere, and Monsanto driving to develop successors to corn-based ethanol, the smartest-and safest-way to wager on alternative fuels may be to bypass startup companies in favor of old standards with a broad business base.
