Portfolio managers at many mutual fund companies use a revolving door. The typical manager spends no more than five years running any particular portfolio, and many jump ship in a couple of years. But at the $8.1 billion Dodge & Cox Income Fund, the nine-person management team has an average tenure of 12 years on the fund, and many in the group have been with the firm for at least 15 years. "People tend to come to Dodge & Cox and spend their entire career," says team Dana Emery, a team member at the San Francisco firm since 1983.
