Bond funds are boring? No longer. Those investing in rock-solid, short-term U.S. government is-sues produced an average total return of 2.39% in the third quarter through Sept. 24-a stellar performance com-pared with the 19.6% loss by the av-rnerage diversified equity fund. Re-turns at funds in-vesting in long-and intermediate-term government paper did even bet-ter, racking up re-turns of 3.8% and 3.76% respectively, according to data compiled for Busi-nessWeek by Stan-dard & Poor's, bothrnpart of The McGraw-Hill Companies.
