The debate over corporate responsibility and "conscious capitalism," as the authors note, has a lengthy history. The modern debate, I believe, began in 1967 when the top executives of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler saw their city ransacked and burning in the Detroit riots. A story, perhaps apocryphal, has a black leader of the time tell ing the auto industry officials, "If you can't fix it, nobody can." Puffed up by this call to arms and memories of the auto industry as World War II's "arsenal of democracy," auto executives became the first modern American advocates of the concept of "corporate responsibility." In 1968, Henry Ford II of Ford Motor Company partnered with President Lyndon Johnson to create the National Alli ance of Businessmen (later the National Alliance of Business) to create training programs to place the "hard-core" urban unemployed in jobs in dozens of Amer ican cities. As many predicted, the track record of the NAB was mixed, though it limped along until the 2000s.
