Aircraft accident investigators rely heavily on the availability of flight-and ground-recorded information to derive the probable cause of an accident. During the last 50 years, there has been a tremendous increase in civil air travel; and, although the aircraft accident rate has been declining, the number of accidents has risen. The requirements for onboard recording equipment, particularly Flight Data Recorders, have evolved from exceptionally simple devices, recording a dozen or so parameters, to today's systems in which up to 1,000 parameters are now recorded.
