摘要

Succession planning is all the rage. Western economies, and Canada's perhaps more than any other, are in the midst of unprecedented labour force churning. Every sector, including colleges and universities, is affected; the national Sector Councils in Canada have been addressing the matter for years. Our federal bureaucracy, mirrored across the provinces, has activated recruitment programs to maintain the social capital embodied in the baby boomers of their top ranks. And Canada's professoriate enters a retirement wave anticipated since the mid 1990s. At a system level, faculty renewal is much less planned and rather more diffuse and organic. Nevertheless, we are led to ask how Canadian geography is responding to this boom, bust and echo. The answer, important for any discipline that swelled its ranks in the 1970s, is more complicated than 'hire to replace'. With this early career scholars' series, we seek a substantive answer from the succeeding demographic Cgen-X geographers'), soliciting their thoughts on the directions of the discipline's subspecialities.
