It has always fascinated me that some of the first registered Jerseys imported into Canada arrived here in 1968. They were brought over to the St. Lambert Farm near Montreal. This herd was one of the original sources of Jersey breeding stock available to Canadian farmers. Jerseys also arrived on our Canadian shores as a result of their voyage on the ocean ships, where they served as "boat cows", providing milk to sailors on the crossing. Once they reached our shores they were probably sold to the Quebecers as family dairy cows. This story, however, is to try and recount the interesting development of the Quebec Jersey Cattle Club. The records show that the first official meeting took place in January, 1921, at the New Sherbrooke Hotel, in Sherbrooke. At that time there were 34 Jersey breeders in the province with an inventory of 805 registered cows and 121 grades. Mr. F. Robinson, from Richmond was named President at the meeting and a decision was made to hire Elmo Ashton, from Foster, as fieldman. As a result of their hard work the membership increased to 77 by 1922. In those days some grants were made available for Jersey shows at Ormstown Fair, Valleyfield Fair and Sherbooke Fair.
