摘要

The disease prevention methods discussed in the previous section focus attention on the new arrival and how to minimize the risk of bringing new disease agents onto the farm. This section will focus on the use of preventive health procedures on the resident herd both before and after the addition of new animals. A set of procedures that take both a defensive and offensive approach to disease prevention is critical, Such biosecurity activities are directed at preventing disease from developing in exposed and infected animals and spreading to the rest of the herd. An important disease control concept to keep in mind is that exposure and infection do not equal disease. There are many disease agents that animals will be exposed to, and infected with, in spite of any disease control efforts. Victory can still be claimed if these efforts prevent clinical or economically important subclinical diseases from developing in infected animals.
