Dairy cattle move throughout Canada with virtually no restrictions. As a producer, you enjoy this advantage thanks only to the billion dollar battle your Association members and others have won against a series of economically crippling diseases. On the one hand a marketing asset, this freedom of movement could also endanger your herd. Animals freely on the move, like people, transmit a series of infections. Many are innocuous or only inconvenient. They can often be avoided through vaccination and by isolating additions. Others are more challenging. Despite your own best efforts, they may wind up in a neighbour's herd and then simply blow, flow or be carried across into yours.
