Our family is the fifth generation of farmers. My father-in-law sold his cows in 1960 due to a heart condition and the farm sat vacant until 1978 when we started. Initially we had all Holsteins. We couldn't get the financing from the Farm Loan Board because they wouldn't accept that the Jersey cow could be profitable. The Farm Loan Board was of the opinion that the Jersey cow was a cream cow. We didn't have a problem borrowing the money as long as we had Holsteins. So we were 100% Holsteins until about nine years ago, when Preston Murray gave Jason a Jersey calf. From that calf, we had four daughters and her descendants are still in the herd. We converted the herd about 4 years ago to 100% Jerseys, to take advantage of MCP and single quota issues.
