摘要

In Canada for the past two decades within the field of Library and Information Science we have given long-standing and more or less consistent attention to the ways in which sexual identity and sexual orientation have intersected with the study of information practices. Indeed, Canadian scholars have pioneered the study of the information needs and uses of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer people. Yet the first article to report on the information needs of adult lesbians, written by Janet Creelman and Roma Harris, was published only 18 years ago. Since then in Canada and beyond we have a slowly growing accumulation of studies that examine the information needs and information practices of people who claim lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer sexual identities and sexual orientations. Such studies include investigations of library use and non-use (e.g., Joyce and Schrader 1997; Stenback and Schrader 1999), the role of bookstores and other community sources of information (e.g., Rothbauer 2004), the role of human intermediaries (e.g., Curry 2005), the use of information resources and services including barriers to access to information (e.g., Whitt 1993), as well as to reading and readers (e.g., Pecoskie 2005). While much attention has been focused on LGBQ_users whose identities affect their needs for information and their modes of access to information, some research has emphasized the role of information systems, collection practices, and classification schemes in the provision of LGBQ_information (e.g., Boon and Howard 2004; Campbell 2000). Other important work has garnered visibility for LGBTQJiterature through the publication of booklists and bibliographies (e.g., Cart and Jenkins 2006). For detailed recent reviews of LIS research concerned with sexual identity and sexual orientation, see Rothbauer (2007) and Schrader and Wells (2004).
