摘要

How is talk radio political? Much of the literature in political sciencenanswers this question through discussion of talk radio’s capacity to informnits listeners as to their political choices and by judging its content on thenbasis of whether or not it improves the listener’s capacity to make suchnchoices ~see Barker, 2002; Buckley, 2000; Dale and Naylor, 2005; Hart-nley, 2000; Page, 1996!. These approaches treat the listener as a pre-nformed subject, one that consumes information, deliberates and makesndecisions about ~political! problems, often citing the importance of thenmedia in Habermas’ concept of the public sphere ~Habermas, 1989!.Inntaking the listener as a pre-formed subject, these approaches ignore bothnthe importance of media in the formation of subjectivity and the politi-ncal nature of this subject formation ~as argued most famously by Fou-ncault!. In fact, the listener does not come to radio with his perspective, nviews, mindset, and conceptual vocabulary fully formed, awaiting thensonorous voice of authority to provide the last piece of information henneeds to determine whom to vote for. The act of listening constructs thenlistener, the listener’s mindset, perspective, his subjectivity. Those authorsnthat do focus on radio’s role in subject formation often use the opportu-nnity to criticize the invasion of the airwaves by shock jocks and inflam-nmatory hosts hailing from the conservative end of the political spectrum, narguing that the populism stirred by such radio works to underminendemocracy ~Gingras, 2007; Sampert, 2009!. Although these authors acceptnradio as a medium of interpellation, their studies ultimately function tonreinscribe the conception of radio as a means of disseminating information in a democracy. Very little scholarship on radio attempts to link thenexperience of the listener to the political process of subject formation.
