It was at the Twente Canal that 4th Armoured Division hit its first serious opposition. Major-General Vokes ordered Brigadier Moncel to use "Tiger Force" at a crossing point near Delden. The Lines, with supporting and diversionary fire from the Lake Superiors and Governor General's Foot Guards, were over the canal quickly enough, but before long the bridgehead was heavily counterattacked and one company was completely cut off. The company commander, Major J.A. Dunlop, called mortars down on his own position to defeat one attack and preserved a foothold. Early on the morning of 4 April the Lines moved into Delden where the town's citizens went wild with joy and relief. The Twente Canal and Delden may seem like minor affairs compared to the Hochwald but the Lines alone took 67 casualties in the day's fighting.
