The operations of 3rd Canadian Division during the first week of April were closely tied to the task of 1st Canadian Corps in the struggle to capture Arnhem, re-bridge the Rhine and open a major maintenance route for both the Canadian and British armies. The battle for Arnhem was the responsibility of 49th Division. 1st British Corps, which had served under General Crerar's command since 23 July 1944, had rejoined Second British Army when 1st Canadian Corps arrived from Italy, but the West Riding Division was left in place to undertake a revised version of Operation "Wallstreet." The first task was to clear the "island" between Nijmegen and Arnhem, an area the regiments of 49th Division knew thoroughly from months of patrols. The Ontario Regiment of 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade provided the tank support for this operation which began on 2 April. The 49th Division was also assisted by the 11th Canadian Infantry Brigade which cleared the left flank as the British advanced.
