On 28 March Field Marshal Montgomery declared, "we have won the battle of the Rhine." He went on the urge his commanders to exploit the new situation as quickly as possible. First Canadian Army was to "open up the supply route to the north through Arnhem and then to clear Northeast Holland, the coastal belt (of Germany) towards the Elbe and West Holland."
