摘要

This month's Global State of the Industry rover story kicks off with the headline, "Beyond Borders." And in the lead, I cite this extraordinary example of a small, Chicagoland-based entrepreneurial company, Vintage Confections, that's selling premium lollipops to China. As I note in the piece, the confectionery industry - thanks to the Internet - is bypassing borders. Unfortunately, there are other barriers besides borders that need to be addressed. One of them is gender inequality. Earlier this month, Mondelez International revealed a third-party assessment study involving the status of women in the cocoa-growing areas of Ghana and the Ivory Coast that was conducted by Michael Hiscox and Rebecca Goldstein of Harvard University. And while Ghana fared better than the Ivory Coast in recognizing women as equal partners, the report underscored the fact that it's still a man's world, regardless whether it's cocoa farming or running a business.
