Andrei Korkunov didn't have any prior experience with chocolate when he opted to get into the confectionery business. Actually, one can almost say he was left literally holding the chocolates when a joint-venture effort Korkunov initiated dissolved during Russia's economic crisis in 1998. The 41-year-old entrepreneur and driving force behind A. Korkunov, a Moscow-based manufacturer of premium chocolates, had left the military in the early 1990s to pursue a career in business, getting involved in a variety of interests ranging from construction to foreign trade. Through those interests, Korkunov became involved with an Italian chocolate manufacturer.
