摘要

When Dean Spangler returned home to Bryan, Ohio, as Spangler Candy Co.'s new president and ceo in 1996, he had several good reasons for doing so. After all, as he relates, "I used to ride my bike to the plant and visit my father who would give me a Dum Dum right off the line. I grew up in this town, went to high school here." In foregoing a lucrative position as president of a $275-million brick business unit in North America, the so-called "brass ring with stock options, the works," Dean didn't just join the family business merely for nostalgic reasons. In discussing the current state of affairs with his cousin, Greg Spangler, then president of the company, the two determined that the family business had reached a critical juncture. It was during that meeting that Greg decided to offer the job to Dean. The challenge; as well as the culture at the company, appealed to him.
