Smart card technology may be the latest 'must-have' in the battle against fraudsters and attackers, but the long-term success of smart card schemes can be assured only if they are designed using the latest countermeasures to combat potential attacks. Ken Warren, smart card business manager at Cryptography Research, tells CTT that although the discovery of Differential Power Analysis (DPA) was a shock to the smart card and semiconductor community, leading products from the best manufacturers now deploy effective DPA countermeasures. "In a secure environment, it is understandable that people will want to attack the system. This could be for personal or financial gain, or even 'just because they can". Whatever the motivation, it's in everyone's interests to ensure security remains tight and potential attackers are kept out.
