As the requirement for greater levels of security in both the government and commercial sectors has accelerated, so has the need for documents to be issued with suitable levels of complexity that can thwart potential attack. This article tracks some of the major trends seen in the area of plastic card personalisation. Plastic card personalisation technologies have come a long way since the days of magnetic stripe technology, when credit cards dominated the market and access control was a black and white photograph on a badge. Over the years, as fraud and counterfeit levels increased and demand for much higher security features grew, plastic card personalisation technologies were developed with a raft of features, turning cards into highly secure tokens for a range of applications. Modularity became the buzzword of the industry with systems being developed to suit issuers' personalisation needs.
