When Children's Hospital at Montefiore in New York City opened its doors in 2001, its mission was to change the way pediatric patients received health care and the hospital was designed with that goal in mind. Taking the popular astronomer Carl Sagan as an inspiration, all seven patient floors offer interactive, child-friendly information about the grandeur of the universe, as well as the wonders and workings of the human body. As part of that approach, the hospital created the "Explorer Network," an Internet-like portal that allows children to access a range of information and entertainment. Anthropologist Jeb Weisman, the man tapped to create the interactive system, knew the entry device to this system needed to have certain properties, and he decided smart cards fit the bill. "We were trying to decide how children would log into the network," says Weisman, the hospital's senior director of information systems and technologies, "You can't ask a sick child to remember a user ID, or have them spend the whole day with tech support people."
