Swiping a plastic payment card through a point of sale terminal at the grocery store or gas station has become a common way to pay. That's particularly true in such mature card markets as the United States, where the average consumer carries about five cards in his or her wallet. Yet issuers, card associations and merchants continually seek to solidify their position by introducing new form factors and features that enhance the payment experience. One example is the rising interest in North America over the past 18 months in "contact-less" payments-that is, payments initiated via standardized radio frequency (RF) technologies as an extension of the magnetic stripe card in most consumers' wallets.
