Us-based all-cargo operator Kalitta air bought a new 747-40ERF (37304), and put it into revenue service in mid-December. We say "a new 747-400ERF" because this aircraft has never seen service - revenue or otherwise - but it is in fact two-and-a-half years old. It is one of a pair of 747-400ERFs ordered by Kuwait-based LoadAir Cargo, a startup carrier that collapsed before ever leaving the ground. The two freighters (the last two 747-400s Boeing built) were never delivered, and went directly to storage in the US desert, where they stayed with their ownership clouded in mystery until recently. Kalitta is also negotiating a possible purchase of the second of the pair (37303), but tells Cargo Facts that no deal has been finalized. Tokyo-based SK&Y Associates assisted in the purchase. In addition to this new freighter, Kalitta currently operates fifteen 747-200Fs and seven 747-400BCFs. Australian carriers V AUSTRALIA and AIR AUSTRALIA have outsourced their cargo operations to UK-based virgin atlantic. Virgin's cargo boss John Lloyd was recently quoted in Cargonews Asia as saying the arrangement with V Australia (which operates 777-300 service between Australia and the US) was "already working pretty well for us."
