It's Geneva. It's cold and wet. But despite all the gloom, there's a surprising amount of optimism emanating from the IATA offices. The new-look cargo department is brimming with ideas on how to change the industry into something a little more sustainable. As Des Vertannes, IATA head of cargo, said: "We were putting our entire attention towards transforming the industry and then Yemen happened." He added that 2011 has been a tough year, citing the Arab Spring, Japanese earthquake, oil prices, the eurozone crisis and Thai floods. "But the industry is still a lifeline, and if air cargo has a good year, airlines get a good bottom line and their CEOs notice how important air cargo is." The dream to "transform" the industry is taking shape. IATA is to launch its own, unsponsored awards which, happily, stay clear of the revenue-driven award model. Instead, they are to encourage innovation. Two are for green issues, to recognize efficient energy practices and reducing environmental footprint. Two are for social responsibility, including investing in future leaders. One is for supply chain partnerships, and the last, and likely the most highly prized, is for a Game Changing idea. The awards mark real change at IATA, which had come under fire in recent years for its commercial approach, but now seems not only to be fully supportive of the cargo team's aims, but is also attempting to drive real change in an industry which has suffered both from its low status within airlines and from the fear instilled in management by the price-fixing investigations.
