The big news from Asia this past month has been the latest installment in cutbacks from debt-laden Japan Airlines, which was forced to announce its bankruptcy this January suffering debts of $16bn. Much has been made of JAL's announcement this March that it would cease all main-deck freighter operations effective the end of October, but one thing the announcement does not mean is that JAL is exiting the freight business altogether. The company has already begun to shift cargo to the bellies of its passenger fleet, and will continue to do so as the freighters come out of service.
