Shippers switch from container lines to airlines: Container shipping lines endured their worst year in living memory in 2009. As part of a ruse to drive rates back up in 2010 they have continued to hold ships in hibernation, despite demand picking up dramatically, creating headaches for shippers and plenty of cargo being rolled over at the docks. So bad has the situation become, with 5% of the global container fleet still laid up, that shippers are resorting to air freight. Bjorn Jensen, Vice President Global Freight and Logistics Services for appliances giant Electrolux, said: "There is tremendous pressure on all trade lanes with more cargo than ships deployed." Electrolux, along with a host of other well-known shippers, has had to resort to using airfreight to get product to market in recent months.
