The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines said the region's carriers reported international cargo traffic for May up 39.0% y-o-y to 5.71 billion FTKs - which Cargo Facts believes to be the highest total for any month the AAPA has ever reported. The 39% increase in May was the highest year-over-year gain since the recovery began for the region's carriers late last year, and traffic for the first five months of 2010 was up 35.6% to 25.79 billion RTKs. As might be expected with the steeply accelerating demand for air freight, carriers have been returning parked capacity to service, and reported their total cargo capacity up 22.2% y-o-y in May. As long as demand stays this strong, some capacity increase is obviously required, but at the same time, capacity discipline must be maintained or yields will suffer.
