Non-thermal plasma, which is referrecj/as the fourth state of matter, has promising properties for decontamination and modification of inorganic and organic surfaces for a wide range of applications In many steps of pre- and postharvest processes. This article presents an overview on current plasma treatment options and on the current knowledge of plasma technology for microbial decontamination In post-harvest treatments of plant raw material like wheat grains. Moreover, we present a case study on the efficient inactivation of Bacillus atrophaeus spores on wheat grains by using plasma processed air, achieving a reduction factor of up to 5.2 lg-steps. Finally, the potential of plasma treatments for agriculture purposes on the pre-harvest level, e.g. as alternative for chemical treatments is discussed in detail. Besides inactivation of microorganisms, physical plasma is able to stimulate biological systems. Positive effects of plasma on e.g. plant growth and development will be examined with respect to application in agriculture as well.
