The merit of untried ideas is inherently found in their potential, not past performance. Such is the case with joint audits. At the second annual National Retail Tenants Conference in Orlando, Fla., attention was drawn to this little-practiced concept as a way to cost-effectively and professionally resolve questions about occupancy costs. Naturally, the topic raised some eyebrows, and hands, of retailers' lease administrators who had questions about joint audits' benefits and pitfalls. Indeed, the approach has its fans and critics. Many aren't even familiar with the idea.

7. Using a unique dataset of joint-stock companies, we explore the corporate audit system in transition Russia.
