I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say this as though it were some immutable fact of life. What disturbs me most about this viewpoint, is that it's so pervasive in pur society. I've heard college grads and congressmen say the very same things. And every time I hear this old saw, I have to count slowly to 10 and remind myself that conventional wisdom is almost never wise, or even remotely factual.
