Since opening in August 1992, the Mall of America, Bloomington, Minn., has been a dedicated advocate of energy conservation. The 4.2-mil-lion-sq.-ft.-retail/entertainment complex even has its own on-site recycling center. Over the past several years, many of its energy initiatives have been adopted by other shopping centers throughout the nation. In its latest, sure-to-be watched energy-related move, the mall has signed a 10-year contract with Northern States Power Co. (NSP). The agreement makes NSP the official electric supplier to the mall and its re-tail tenants (approximately 520 in all).
