As Britain's largest electronics retailer, Dixons could easily get away with penalizing manufacturers who don't send and receive trading documents electronically. But unlike powerful retailers stateside, the chain has managed to get the vast majority of its suppliers up and running on electronic data interchange through the art of gentle persuasion. "We haven't got a huge tail of suppliers to go, so we've apparently taken the right approach by not penalizing suppliers who aren't EDI-compliant," explained Pam Bingley, commercial systems controller of Dixons Group PLC, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, England. Suppliers who are not EDI-compliant face stiff chargebacks from companies like Federated Dept. Stores and Kmart in the United States.
