If smart cards can make it in New York City, they can make it anywhere. Seven hundred merchants on Manhattan's Upper West Side have been accepting the cards in a test since October of last year. Six grocery stores are among them. The grocers—two D'Agostino's, a Gristede's, a Fairway, a Zabar's and a Food Emporium—say few customers favor the cards over other payment options. None report more than 2% of all their payment volume transacted via the cards.
