Depending on the trends, retailers will postpone existing systems initiatives, focus on nonstrategic systems projects, or gut ambitious systems plans. This reactive aspect of the retail industry has hurt highly imaginative systems opportunities. At present, three major business trends have altered the course for many companies: rapid consolidation, Year 2000 compliance and Wal-Mart expansion.
