Here's another blow to the policy consensus of the 1990s and much of the 2000s. Did the Washington Consensus work in Chile? Roland Benedikter and Katja Siepmann think not. Some call Chile the "Switzerland of the global South" because of its economic advances. But surveys show that the people have little faith in the future and that trust in their government and in business is low. Chile, of course, followed the Washington Consensus model, having imported advisers from the University of Chicago. But outward success is belied by social unrest. What is its future? What must change? The authors unravel the dilemma in a wonderful narrative. They start with the story of one entrepreneurial family. A family's tale, as the authors put it, embodies the ambiguous history of the country between emancipation and neoliberalism that led to today's situation.
