It's time to take economics back. In a comprehensive piece, Robert Wade of the London School of Economics surveys the damage done by the acceptance of neoliberal economics as orthodoxy not only in the United States but across Europe. The consequences include wealth and income inequality, poor health status, undermining of democracy, and a weakening economic foundation. What to do? Go on the attack, he says. Restore labor's power, analyze all taxes for the redistribution consequences, constructively use industrial policy, and stop talking down government, among other recommendations. He makes one of the most powerful cases around for a vigorous return to left-of-center economics.
