In his remarkable piece for Challenge, Harvard Business School professor Bruce Scott distills what seems like a lifetime of learning into a concise analysis of the historical tension between capitalism and democracy. In a time of growing inequality, consistent deregulation, and the rising power of lobbyists, is there any more important issue for the United States? Scott points out that there has always been tension between these two systems of governance. But history also makes it clear that markets must be subject to political governance.
