Fear of big deficits holds sway among Americans. Robert Blendon and John Benson of Harvard again summarize the findings of the major public opinion surveys in their annual report for Challenge. They find that the American public still ranks the deficit as the country's biggest problem. With that constraint, how can the United States deal with its fiscal cliff before the new year begins? According to an earlier congressional agreement, taxes will rise substantially and spending will be cut automatically, and the economy will take a big hit from austerity when it can least afford it.
