Elemental beryllium (Be) is a hard, brittle, steel-grey, lightweight metal. It is an alkaline earth metal in Group IIA of the periodic table, having an oxidation state of +2. Its compounds are white and they are soluble in hot or cold water. The chloride, fluoride, nitrate, and sul-fate are very soluble in water. The metal, carbonate, hydroxide, phosphate, and acetate are slightly soluble in water.
