摘要

Scientists often resort to models to describe a theory. When describing angular momentum in a seminar, a physicist may say: "Imagine a spherical racecar running on a frictionless track" - preposterous. She does so without any expectation of disbelief from her audience. We slice the insolent details away from the important matter at hand, and learn. Economists do this too - they call it "ceteris paribus," or "other things being equal." Of course, other things never are equal. But, if we distill the discussion to the basic elements, sinter it in an intellectual crucible, we will find pure gold. That is not where the problem lies. The problem lies in the wind resistance of the race-car and the changes therein brought about by dynamic angles in the body. It exerts itself in the asphalt that provides the traction the car needs to propel itself down the track and tread of the tires. None of these things affect the real issue - the car has to stop turning when it gets to the straightaway - but they affect the reality, each in their own way. Truly, they are not material to the equation, but they are inseparable. They are noise.
