摘要

Very varied conditions govern the cracking of components in pressure vessels and pipelines under stress, and they are dependent on the grade of steel, the medium, and the working parameters. Here I consider a phenomenological model for the working life in corrosion cracking. The physical nature of the mechanism is not examined. The method is based on a model for a fictitious crack devised for fatigue failure. We assume that the smooth surface of the component has an initial crack of depth l_0, for which ΔK_(th) = 1.12Δσ_(th)(πl_0)~(1/2) (1) where ΔK_(th) is the threshold value of the stress intensity coefficient (SIC), which is such that crack fatigue growth "does not occur; and Δσ_(th), is the stress range in tension-compression of the smooth specimen, which corresponds to unrestricted lifetime.
