The metal consumption and reliability of flanged joint depend to a certain degree on the width of the gasket. Various recommendations for selection of the gasket width are cited in regulatory-technical documents and technical literature. For high-pressure joints in which the gasket is located in a closed volume, for example, the width B of the gasket is determined from the strength of the flanges that close-out its surfaces under their maximum loading: with preliminary tightening of threaded fasteners for force-type joints, and under operating conditions for self-sealing joints. For joints with gaskets in which capillaries may exist, it is recommended that the width if the gasket be no less than 9 mm (to seal gaseous media). In the majority of informational sources, however, it is recommended that the width of the gasket be selected (without adequate verification) proceeding from its material, the pressure of the working medium, and the diameter and thickness of the gasket.
