Perfecting power-plant valves is a pressing task because the existing ones, for the most part, no longer meet current needs. So, it is necessary to look for new designs and materials whose use would allow creation of a new generation of valves. This task has been achieved by developing a new shutoff-type throttle valve for vaporous and gaseous media. A standard valve of this type (Fig. 1) usable as a throttle regulator of a rapid pressure-reduction and cooling unit (RPRCU) consists of an angle body having feed pipes, a diffuser-like seat, a profiled valve (slide valve), an outlet pipe, a throttle grid, a stem, a clip, a gland seal, a bonnet, and an external stem driving system. The chief virtue of the valve is simplicity of its design. The defects are: 1. inability of the valve to relieve (lack of balance of the valve) significantly limits its dimensions because the axial forces on the stem required to readjust the valve increase in proportion to the square of the seating diameter D_s; 2. the valve is a source of impermissibly loud noise while using in a pressure-reduction and cooling unit (PRCU) or a rapid pressure-reduction and cooling unit (RPRCU); 3. increased vibrations in most conditions; 4. shorter time between overhauls and shorter overall service life.
