Ensuring reliable, safe operation of equipment at high temperatures and pressures is a matter of urgent concern. To a considerable degree the reliability and safety of the main equipment is determined by the reliability of the valving, safety, and control accessories. As shown by analysis about half of all accessory failures are due, to one degree or another, to the sealing system functioning unsatisfactorily. At present, highly efficient and reliable seals based on thermally expanded graphite (TEG) have replaced asbestos packing in plants of the petrochemical, chemical, and other industries over the world. The use of new sealing material requires fundamentally new approaches to the installation of seals in a stuffing box chamber. Ensuring that the stuffing box is leakproof requires that the working fluid under pressure be prevent from leaking: 1. over the surface of the rod and the inside of the packing; 2. over the wall of the stuffing box chamber and the outside of the packing; 3. through the pores of the packing itself, if it is not sealed sufficiently.
